HOW TO TEACH LINE DANCING, Part 1

Description: This workshop is designed for the person who has limited experience in teaching line dancing. We will start from the beginning with what is line dancing, what are the basic dance steps, and what are the expectations of good teaching. The following topics will be covered:

  • Basics of music and rhythm
  • The correct terminology for the most common steps used in line dancing
  • The correct performance of the most common steps used in line dancing
  • Where to begin the dance in a song
  • The How to’s of the following skills:
  • Diagram a song
  • Memorize a dance
  • Read a step description
  • Break down the dance into 4-8 count segments to teach
  • “Go back to the beginning” and practice “up to here”
  • Teach a dance to all 4 walls
  • Attach the ending and the beginning of the dance.
  • Verbally cue a dance in rhythm to the music and cue rhythmically without the music.
  • Do a preparatory movement with your body to get ready to move/do a step
  • Give an audible cue in advance of starting a movement
  • Find music, set up a music library, and access step descriptions and videos on the internet
 Participants will be assigned a dance to teach using the elements of good teaching and will be asked to perform the common line dancing steps with proper form and timing. Participants will also be asked to take a short written test.

  
Participants who successfully complete the workshop will be given a certificate of attendance and completion at the end of the workshop.

 
Open to all Smart Moves instructors and subs free of charge. This is your chance to learn how to teach line dancing and incorporate it in your classes. Veteran instructors are welcome to attend as a refresher.
Others: $15. This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning how to teach line dancing. Make checks payable to Smart Moves LLC.

Line Dance Opportunities

Hope you all had a good weekend. This weather is awesome! Great time to enjoy the great outdoors (except for the yellow pollen cloud!). But, as the weather warms, and draws us out to play, I hope you will continue to find time to dance as well. Here are a few opportunities to do so:


Monday: Line dance lessons at Fultondale Friendship Hall, $5, 7-9.

Tuesday: Line dancing and lessons with Karen at Graben's Garage, free, 7 pm. 6495 Service Road, Trussville. Bring favorite beverage, snack and music.

Friday: Southern Two Steppers Dance at Eastlake Elks Lodge #79, free, 50/50 raffle, 7:30-11:00. Bring favorite music for DJ Paul Barksdale to play.

Sunday: Swing Night at Nana Funks with DJ Jonathan.
Other: Deputy Five plays Cafe Firenze (Birmingham) April 14th at 9:00 (duo) and April 17th at 9:30 (full band).

From I-459 South: take Hwy 150 exit (Exit 10). At bottom of ramp turn left onto Hwy 150.
Go to the 3rd red light where Walgreens is on the left.
Turn left onto Preserve Parkway (Regions Park ballpark will be to your Right).
Drive 2.6 miles and continue thru 2 red lights, passing The Grove Shopping Center on the left.
The road will narrow to two lanes. Continue to the circle intersection and turn right onto Village Green Way.
Go to first stop sign and turn left onto Preserve Way.
